House of Representatives Extend State Creation Memoranda Deadline to March 26

The House of Representatives has extended the deadline for submitting memoranda on creating new states and local governments to March 26, 2025.

House spokesperson Akin Rotimi stated that the decision follows public requests for more time to refine and resubmit proposals in line with Section 8 of the 1999 Constitution.

It would be recalled that the House Committee on Constitution Review had earlier announced that none of the 31 proposals received so far met the constitutional requirements.

According to Rotimi, to qualify, state creation proposals must have the backing of at least two-thirds of elected representatives from the affected areas.

For new local governments, state assembly votes and referendum results must be submitted to the National Assembly.
