IGP Egbetokun Urges Immediate Nationwide Adoption of Community Policing

The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has called for the urgent implementation of community policing across Nigeria, emphasizing the need for proper funding and comprehensive training of officers.

Egbetokun made this appeal during the Maiden Edition of the Centre for Peace and Security Studies, CPSS, Alumni Public Lecture at Al-Hikmah University, Ilorin.

Speaking on the theme “Effective Policing of Nigeria for Sustainable Peace and Security: The Role of Stakeholders,” the IGP, who is also the first PhD graduate of the Centre for Peace and Security Studies, CPSS, at the university, stressed the importance of a holistic and inclusive approach to security.

He highlighted the need for policy reforms, institutional strengthening, active community involvement, and the integration of modern technology to improve security sustainably.

The police chief also advocated for legislative reforms to update the Police Act, ensuring it reflects modern principles and practices of policing.

In his welcome address, the Vice Chancellor of Al-Hikmah University, Professor Noah Yusuf, described the lecture as timely and relevant, calling on all stakeholders to embrace result-driven policing strategies that will promote peace and foster national development.
