The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has warned newly admitted students of Al-Hikmah University, Ilorin, to stay away from drug abuse, describing it as a major threat to their academic future and overall wellbeing.
Speaking at the university’s orientation programme for new students, the Kwara State Commandant of the NDLEA, Fatima Abiola, disclosed that an estimated 14.3 million Nigerians are involved in drug use, with young people accounting for the majority. She added that one in every four drug users in the country is female. The Commandant cautioned the students against the use of psychotropic substances, noting that such drugs damage the brain and often lead to poor academic performance and long-term health challenges. She also advised students to be cautious about accepting drinks or food from strangers and urged them to report any suspected cases of drug abuse to appropriate university authorities.
The orientation programme, held at the Adeta Campus of the university, brought together members of the university management and invited speakers to guide the new students on academic life, conduct and personal development.
In his address, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Lateef Oladimeji, assured the students of uninterrupted academic programmes throughout their stay in the institution. He traced the history of Al-Hikmah University, noting that it was licensed on January 5, 2005 as Nigeria’s first Islamic faith-based university and has grown from an initial population of 70 students to over 10,000 students across nine faculties. The Vice-Chancellor reminded the students that admission into the university comes with the responsibility of good conduct and adherence to institutional rules.
Also speaking, the Registrar, Dr. Kazeem Oladimeji, described the orientation as a critical stage in the students’ academic journey. He urged them to manage their time effectively and conduct themselves responsibly, warning that the university has zero tolerance for cultism, examination malpractice and other forms of misconduct.
Earlier, the Dean of Student Affairs, Dr. Afeez Lawal, said the orientation programme was designed to familiarise students with the university system and help them navigate campus life successfully. He advised them to remain focused on their studies and avoid distractions that could derail their academic goals.
The Director of Academic Planning, Dr. Abdulrauf Tosho, encouraged the students to maintain close contact with their Level Advisers, describing them as important sources of academic guidance and support. In a related presentation, Dr. Saidat Onikosi-Aliu urged the students to set clear goals and plan their academic journey deliberately, stressing that effective planning is essential for success in the university.
